Category: Geeks r Us
I mentioned some of these things in other posts, but I wanted to discuss them in more detail because they're really driving me crazy, especially 6. Please, if anyone can help me resolve them, I would really appreciate it.
I switched from XP to 7 a few months ago, and can barely tolerate it, for several reasons.
1. Search box. The search function in XP was far better, as it allowed me to set criteria and also displayed all files with the word/phrase specificied. In 7, I have often it seen it not do so, even though I knew that the files existed and even when I told it to give me more results.
2. Permissions. I never had to do this in XP and fail to see the reason for it. Yes, I did have to change a few settings to enable system files to be displayed, and if, for whatever reason, I wanted to edit any (not that I ever did), I would have to say yes to a dialogue. But now, I have to go through a whole process just to access my documents! So I made a separate folder for them.
3. Sound. This problem seems to have resolved itself. But I have had it happen to me more times than I can count. I would be working on something, say a simple document in Wordpad, and NVDA would stop speaking. Sometimes, if I touched the annoying touch strip at the top of my laptop, it would come back. But at other times, some of the sound would be on (like an mp3 in Windows Media Player) but NVDA and the tone that I get when reaching the end of the document would be off, and the only way for me to get them back was to reboot. I would try to save the document, but it didn't always work out.
4. Saving files. In Wordpad, Notepad, and in anything else where I have to save a file, the dialogue has become needlessly complicated. From the okay button, hitting shift tab, i now see "toolbar, hide folders button", "save as type," "file name", the contents of the folder where I last saved", "name space control tree view", and "address". There is also some kind of split button, but sometimes, not everything reads when I tab and shift tab around, and there are times when it's so bad that it won't even tell me into which folder I'm saving! At other times, if I go to the wrong section, it won't display the contents of the folder or it will show me stupid things like "a-f, q-z", etc.
5. Ribbons in Wordpad and Notepad. I solved this by renaming the programs that were built-in downloading versions for Vista, and substituting with these. Otherwise, I would have been driven mad. What is the purpose of this garbage!
6. "Unknown" and "task switching". Lately, when I use Firefox, it says "unknown" when I try to go through the links on a page, especially Facebook and Youtube. Restarting NVDA doesn't always help, and I have gotten so frustrated that I have actually switched browsers, and am now forced to use Internet Explorer, which I find to be very bloated and full of unnecessary things, like toolbars, after version 6. I also have a problem where NVDA will simply say "task switching" or "task switching list" as I move between windows, even those on my computer and not on the net! It won't read the window either and seems to have trouble focusing.
Has anyone tried Windows 8 or 8.1? If so, are they any better than 7? I have heard bad things about them being even more complicated, but some people seem to love them. Keep in mind that I don't like touchscreens. But I heard that they'll be releasing a new update that is supposed to be more friendly for non touch users. If none of this helps, then should I switch my screen reader? I've been using NVDA for a few years now, and really like it. I use the Michel voice with ESpeak, because it can read Greek. Otherwise, I would be forced to either pay for a Greek-speaking synthesizer or to use standard ESpeak, which is terrible.
I apologise for my dimwhittedness today. But between phone calls, e-mails, and posting the same topics to various sites, I forgot that I had already posted here about this. Unfortunately, The Zone still won't allow us to edit and/or delete our own threads, as most sites do now. So either disregard this one, or perhaps we can discuss the core issues that are causing all of this trouble. Thanks.
There is no reason you should have had to make a folder just for your documenbts. from what I've seen (and I kept the default for documents), it just works as its suppose too.
I have saved files and it does work. I don't know if there is a classic setting to try to make things appear as they did in XP for the save-as dialog.
I've heard Classic Shell works wonders for the start menu.
I'm pretty new to 7 myself, as I only started using it March 28th.
Yes. I have heard that there are programs to make 7 act, or at least appear like, XP. But I would need to know if they're accessible. That would be nice. Yes, I could change the documents folder and probably should do so.
I'm looking at the save as dialog box and I really wish somebody could explain it to me. it appears to be very much re-designed.
I don't know what a lot of the buttens do either, and I have explored them.
Jaws reads them fine, but I don't understand how they work or what they do. further more I have no idea how th these are useful to me.
Here is what i'm lost on. the toolbar that is labled desktop split butten, libraries split butten and documents split butten.
the search box. why is this there and how am I suppose to use it from within this dialog box ?
The explorer pain. there are 3 buttens and I have no idea what two of them do (even though I have explored them.) Organize butten, and views split butten. The new folder butten is self-explanatory.
I have figured out how to work the treeview, which is the next thing I hit when I hit the tab key on my keyboard.
when I tab once more, I hit something that says include two locations. what's that mean? if I hit right arrow , I hit an arrange by butten, and is it is set to folder. if I hit space, I come up with things like author, date, type and tab. what does all that mean ?
If someone can explain the save-as dialog box to me clearly , that would be very useful.
the only two things I don't understand is
ugh. i'm not sure what the last sentince was suppose to be. ignore that. we cant edit shit on this site.
Okay, your libraries are where downloads exist, my documents and ect. Now, if you ever get coat in the drop down menu that starts reading out letters just press escape once. and tab once left. Tiff seriously it really sounds like its your laptops configuration that is causing you headakes not windows7.
I don't have problems with windows 7 per say. it is very stable for me. just don't get some of that stuff.
I know the libraries is whare stuff is stored, like music g goes in th the music folder, vidios in vidios etc.
Libraries because you can have several of them, or like books on a shelf, but the location of that book is on a map you use to get to that book.
Windows 7 has to be set to show the file paths and such, because the default setting doesn't. It is not hard, and if you like I'll post again the directions.
There is a specific way to set 7 for screen readers. I personally don't and didn't like it, but it might be useful.
The search box when you press the windows key is just that.
Say I have a file called peace. I type that in the serch box, hit enter, and get all the results of files with that name in them.
Lately, I only use 7 when working on others computers, so I'm not up to speed on all the fixes in my head. They come to me when I need them, but I can help some.
I personally use 8.1 daily, so.
You can find much instruction on 7 on the Microsoft website.
I also said on your other board your machine is at fault for much of your problems.
If you don't take steps to correct the computer, the OS will never work properly.
hey wayne if you can post what to set those settings to for screene readers, that would be great.
If I don't like it I can change it back.
When it comes to saving files, an easy solution would be to shift tab until you land in that list of files where your last saved location is. Hit backspace until you get your bearings. Basically, if you do that enough, it will take you to your desktop, or your libraries, in which case you can find your documents folder. Assuming that's where you want to save your documents, this should work quite nicely, without having to mess around with all the toolbars and such.
As for ribbons, I'll freely admit that I'm old-fashioned in that way, too. I don't like them. I still use Microsoft Word 2003 for this reason. My version of Windows 7 is 32 bit, so my versions of notepad and wordpad don't require those. As for classic shell, if you really don't like the new start menu, that is fully accessible. However, I've gotten quite used to the new layout, and can't imagine going back to the way it was. I tried classic shell once, just to remember what it was like to not have a search box, and it felt awkward. But if you're really used to the old layout, I can understand how adjusting would be somewhat difficult. I would recommend trying to get used to the new start menu, though, it's really not that bad.
Let's add this to my list of complaints about Windows 7. This morning, the electrician had to come and do some work around the house. So he disconnected the electricity, including the cable modem. For the record, we use Verizon Fios. When it was turned on again, I could access Skype but not the internet. I thought it was my wireless extender, since it kept asking for the pass phrase (webkey) for my connection. I didn't have it, but when Joanie got home, she gave it to me and I was able to connect. But my connection kept going in and out, especially on Skype, to the point that I just used my phone to talk. Eventually, the connection went out completely, and even a system restore couldn't bring it back. So I decided to try my Thinkpad X61, which is running XP, and it works perfectly. I think that, as with one of the commenters at the below link, I have to have Mom go and unplug the cable in the router and plug it into a different port. But honestly! This is ridiculous!
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/b841a022-2579-4e5c-9d45-e6322d3b7b21/windows-7-no-internet-access-but-network-connected
Thankfully, I am subscribed to dialup through Toast.net. They offer dsl, and are working on cable, but neither of them are in my area. Still, it's precisely for times like this that I keep it around. I want to have this machine fixed, and my only other alternative would be to bring out the desktop, which is fine but not exactly portable, or to work on a Dell laptop that should properly have Windows 98 and not XP on it.
Anyway, to catch up on other posts, wow! NVDA doesn't read all of that in the dialogue box for save. I just use Wordpad, and not Notepad, and as I said, I modified those. So that could be why. It sounds far more complicated than it needs to be, but that seems to be the trend these days. I know how to create my own music and videos folder. I don't need special libraries for them, and even if Iused the built in ones with Windows, that's why My Music and My Videos exist.
Other than the sound card, I'm not sure why my computer would be at fault. I, too, would be interested in the screen reader settings. But if it's what is found in accessibility, I think I already changed those to be optimised for screen reader use. As far as 8.1, do you think I would like that better than 7, or would it be worse?
Awesome tiff!Just got 7 too and i use nvda with my sam iphone voice i bought off jj for a
hun ten. You are totally right with the whole goofy file system, it seems really solid and if
you hit that windows key than type fast, that new start setup is nice. Windows 8 is a bad
idea that just had another issue.
In XP,, under Network connections, I have Toast.net. I created a desktop shortcut so that I don't have to go through the extra steps to get there. Is this possible to do in 7?
Not sure. How long have you been using it? Oh and i hate office 10 compared to 2003
but we have to use it. What kind of laptop?
I find this odd some of the issues that some people here have a Windows 7 I'm running an event webcam for my Mac and Windows seven Lions just fine in fact I wouldn't have a sore and helps me and said I had to have a bad temper strange. It could be the configuration of your machine dad could cause certain issues with them
Thankfully, I only use Wordpad and Notepad, so have never gotten a headache from Office. I've been using 7 for about four months now, on an HP Elitebook 2540P.
Thankfully, I only use Wordpad and Notepad, so have never gotten a headache from Office. I've been using 7 for about four months now, on an HP Elitebook 2540P. I also asked Mom to move the cable, and she said that this time, nothing was removed. She just turned the power off and turned it back on. I'm going to ask her to try that, and then, if that doesn't work, to move the cable anyway, and see what happens. For now, I'm on my dialup connection.
I have no idea why that posted twice. Sorry.
I like the start search thing in 7. it works very nicely. I don't see myself trying classic shell any time soon. I dont think i'll need it. I also like the new file search thing that you can do when you enter computer! that shit rocks! so much better than the search for files thing under xp.
I love that windows 7 is as stable as windows XP.
Tiff what you are describing doesn't a make any sense.
My internet lost a connection the other day. all I did was unplug the modom and router (I have seprit ones, not a combo), plug them back in and 7 just saw the connection and it just worked and connected to wireless automaticly. no fuss, no having to restarts for it to renew IP addresses etc like I had to do in XP. none of that shit . it just ... works. I'll never go back to XP again once I upgrade my desktop. you can actually get stuff done and not have to fiddle with this or that to get it to do what you want it to do.
I think that puter of yours needs to go to a shop. it sounds like you got waaaay too much shit goin on for it to be one issue. and the stuff you are talking about? it doesn't even make any sense that you would have all of these problems. my guess is some of your hardware may be going south.
I have been trying to say what the last poster said, heck windows7 even runs quite nice on my sisterin-laws netbook I gave her after getting my mac. The netbook is a asus HE1000. Mind you she will never run out of space because its got a 750 gig hardrive in it and 2 gigs of ram but any way. I would get you computer look at Tiff in a computer shop.
yeah. you did say that earlier, starfly.
so tiff. take that thing to the shop, and let us know what they say.
You can put a shortcut on the desktop for wireless, but it is in your systems tray, so not really necessary.
I'll post the settings I talked about.
Yes, you can always put them back if you don't like the results.
I posted it a long time ago, but don't know how to locate it here, so.
Waine if you ever find them or remember what settings i should change, please post.
I sure do see my wireless in my system trey.
but there are things that were in my system trey of XP that I don't see on the syst trey here in 7 and don't know why?
Crash Plann and MSE come to mind.
Also, I have a lot of programs open right now including Jaws, GW Connect, GW Socal Eyes, AIM and WLM. I don't see those in the system trey either. do I have to go to the task bar and open each program just to close it with the alt+F4 key stroke or thru the menus?? The other option if I know the task name is to go to task manager to end task . but is there another way as in the way of the system trey? or is this one of the things that is different about XP and 7?
What i'm tryin to understand is why I never see these icons in the system trey even when the programs are open.
System tray.
Press windows T. That puts you on the task bar.
Tab down until you hear Notification button, it says more, but you'll know. About two tabs.
Arrow up and look for customize.
In that section you'll see all the things and if you are on one you tab to get to it, and use the arrow keys to say if you want it always shown or only when it is active, or hidden.
You can simply say always show all, and all the running programs will be in the system tray.
That is off the top of my head, but you'll understand.
I forgot to say on the notification button press enter, than arrow up once to customize, or just look at what you see going up and down with arrow keys.
The customize allows you to change everything.
There is another way to get to these settings as well.
That search box type customize and it will pop up on the one you want.
I'll find that file though.
ok this all makes sense but I don't see a customize anywhere. up arrow didn't bring me to it. It only braught me around the things that are already showing in the system trey.
the only things I see (and these always show and these are the only things that show ever are...:
Chevron, my wireless, my battery status, my volume mixer and the clock.
OH ok wayne I found it now!
thanks i'll take a look at this settings.
That worked great wayne!
thanks you have been a great help!
You are welcome.
now if I have things set to only show notifications, how is that different?
I can see what showing icons and notifications does, but not what just showing notification by itself does.
I don't think i'd want to hide both icons and notifications as I'd miss something.
Just showing notifications would be for something like...hmmm, let's say your battery status. If you would only have it set to show notifications, it would only be in your system tray if a warning message popped up, letting you know that your battery was low. Personally, I wouldn't go with that option, because I would want to know what percentage my battery was at.
Another way to get to those settings, if you can't find them for some reason, would be to go into your control panel, and click on notification area icons. I only had to tab a few times to get there, it should be relatively easy to find.
Something else I forgot to mention in my last post is that it will definitely pay to disable uac. People will disagree with me on that, I'm sure, but I find it to be a hindrance and a complete pain in the ass. Jaws won't read the dialogs that are associated with it, and, if you're installing programs, the last thing you want is to request sighted help every time you're installing something, just to get past a stupid security dialog!
I've not disabled UAC , but turned it up to 100%. it actually reads better if it turned up to the highest setting.
Thanks. um. not sure your name, but you've been very helpful!
I've had waaay too much shit happen with XP due to spyware over the years. oh yeah sure I got it fixed and that without a problem, but ya know what if UAC will help to stop the potential of that, i'm willing to hit alt+Y on a control when I hear the ding.
Can someone tell us how to disable UAC?
I'm not on seven yet but my laptop's been ordered and soon ...
Until it comes I'll work with xp and hope I don't get virused.
Thanks.
Bob
go to the start menu and start typing user account control. it'll come up with something that says change user account control settings. hit enter. from there you have 4 choices. the default is 66%. you can use your arros to adjust the percentage and use the jaws curcer to read what each percentage means.
tab to ok and hit enter and its changed.
John
The shortcut that I wanted to create is for my dialup connection, not for wireless. As for UAC, it's one of the few things that I like about 7. NVDA reads the dialogue, and I like the security feature. The only problem is that Java keeps asking for permissions. I say yes, but every time I reboot, it happens. I am very interested in this Classic Shell. Has anyone tried it, and if so, with what screen reader? Can it easily be turned on and off, uninstalled, etc? XP was never perfect, and I had my share of problems with that as well. But it was fast and easier to use. Going back to my Thinkpad today was very pleasant.
As an update on the internet problem, Mom unplugged the router and then plugged it in again. It didn't change things. everything still works on the XP machine, but not on 7. But even in XP, it keeps going in and out. So I don't think this is completely the fault of my computer. At any rate, Mom suggested that I get my own internet service, so that I wouldn't be effected should theirs go out. But I don't trust the big companies, and phrases like "$19.95 for six months", "$34.95 for 12 months" make me nervous. Plus, the prices are insane! But I'm happy to say that, after many hours of searching various sites and Google, I finally found two solutions! The first is called a WISP. It's a wireless internet provider. You can read more about them here. This article is a bit outdated, but still explains the basics. They offer wireless service at a fraction of the cost of cable or dsl from mainstream companies.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2340369,00.asp
Here is a site devoted to wisps.
http://www.wispdirectory.com
This one sounded really good, and is one of my solutions. They say it's even faster than Verizon Fios. But I don't know if they're available in my area, nor did they state the costs for service. So I would need to call them to sort out the details.
http://www.naturalwireless.com
But this one is clearly the best. While nowhere near as fast as the above, it's on a 4g network, costs a flat rate of $10 per month, for those who qualify (I'm blind and low-income, so that's not a problem), and offers unlimited access, with no caps or overage charges. Plus, I can choose either a wireless router, a hotspot, or a usb stick. I'm going with the latter option, as all I need to do is plug it in and start surfing! I'm signing up as soon as possible! *smile*

Jaws 14 and 15 reads the user control warnings just fine. 66% is fine. the 100% is going to warn you even more than you really need, unless you are running at high risk situations, or just want the best.
Yes, I'd disagree, but do set some machines for people that dislike it, so it is off.
When you do this, you take the risk of running these sneaky programs that piggyback on legit things, and sometimes programs on websites you don't see until you install them.
The UCS saves ass!
Disclaimer.
The next stuff I post, you are changing because you know what you are doing right? If you do not understand a setting you will leave it alone, right?
In here you can make Windows show the file extensions, and such things.
Haven’t located the file with all the settings, but here are a few.
You were having problems with folders.
If you type folder options in the search box, you can change how the folders behave.
Click it on. Using control tab you will go through general, view, and search.
On the selection, you tab and arrow down through the settings, and set the ones you want.
If you get lost, go down and select defaults. This will return Windows back to original settings.
Here is a page that will help you set your Windows just the way you want it.
Microsoft also has help pages.
In the search box, type what you want to do.
http://www.wintuts.com/Appearance-Personalization
I should add. I was repairing a machine this week that runs Jaws 12, and it reads the warnings just fine as well.
To locate it press the control tab if you miss it.
Hi Tiffanitsa,
I use windows 7 Pro 64 bit here with Jaws 13 and NVDA with none of the issues you see on your copy. I use Classic Shell to get the start menu back to what it was in XP. Same thing for Internet Explorer 9 and Windows Explorer. I have no issues with Classic Shell here. It starts up when you choose the way you want to view your start menu. To get the Windows XP style in Classic Shell, after you install it choose Classic Style.
Hope this helps.
Thanks Wayne. I was already in folder options at one point and have that set the way I like.
What is the classic theem ? is that something that works better with jaws? I have 7 set to basic theem now. Not sure what if any difference that really has made.

yay multiples? lol
also I just want the best. I don't want programs that are piggybacked installed on my laptop. This is why I overkill it on UAC.
There is also a way to bypass the classic shell interface if you wish to use the regular windows 7 start menu.
I do have a question about installing 7 on my desktop. It is a smallish hard drive (40 gigs). Its more than big enough for everything as far as programs that I'd use but is there a way to tell the installer not to create the windows.old folder? OR if it does creat the windows.old folder is there a way to possibly tell it to put it on a different drive? (my desktop has 3 40 gig internal drives.)
Tiff, one thing you could try before you take your puter to the shop.
You could do a totally fresh clean install of windows 7 if you'd like.
If you are interested in doing that let me know and I'll provide you with how you can do it. yes, its leagle and yes you'll use your already provided product key.
I have no one to take me to the shop, and even if I did, they would probably charge a fortune just to look at the computer, let alone fix it. I actually wanted to send this computer to my friend to have Windows reinstalled on it, and the same holds true for my Thinkpad, though the latter needs some physical issues resolved as well. If I remember correctly, they each have a recovery partition to access and reinstall Windows. But I don't think I can do it on my own, either with XP or 7, and my family's not tech savvy, so I can't ask them. So my machines will probably take a trip, from New Jersey to New Orleans, fairly soon. The Thinkpad definitely will. But if you can help me reinstall 7 on this machine, I would appreciate it.
I cant help you without you having sited help.
However, if you did have sited help, you could do this and it might save you a lot of money.
If its a software or driver thing, a clean install of 7 on your windows 7 puter should fix it.
If after you do your clean install you still have all these problems you then know its a hardware issue.
That's when i'd take it to the shop. First i'd do that clean install to see if it fixes things.
You could use the partition to do the install, but that's the install from the factory too.
that's another option that might fix your problems too.
If you have the tech no-how, and they'll provide the eyes for you to see, then I don't see what the problem is.
I just did this. the person that helped me doesn't know jack shit about windows-7 based computers. she never did install of windows in her life. all she did was read the screen.
Exactly John. The person helping doesn't need to know much, just how to read.
I'd restore the computer back to factory setting, if that is available.
After that, I'd install 7, if that wasn't the factory OS.
John, you can delete that folder after you install 7. It is just a collection of stuff you don't need.
When installing the OS, it can be directed to the drive you want it on, but even with a 40GB drive, you'll be just fine.
The classic start, and all that, will not make Jaws run better. It is just a mental thing for people that hate change.
Learning where things are located, really isn't a hassle.
I don't seem to be able to find that file anymore, but I've given you most of it, except for screen resolution settings, and I personally think these hinder more than help if you aren't running any special programs, such as Sonar, that require them.
The system I just finished is set this way, and when he wants to do other things, he changes the screen back to the default, so web pages and such work best.
I didn't bother changing the screen resolution.
Things works good for me as it is. The only thing I did was change the view settings (I want each folder in a seprit window.) I also wanted UAC at 100%, to show file extentions, and changed how my notifiers come up on the system trey.
That's one nice thing about 7. You don't have to change this display setting or that yadayada thing to make it work wel with jaws.
I might do the install and put the windows.old on a different drive. I make sure to have my stuff backed up to external and am working on backing that up to the cloud.
Tiff before you do that install, have you doublechecked to make sure there is no spyware etc?
All you have done is exactly what personalizing is. You've got it working just the way you want it.
It is beautiful.
Now, can I interest you in Windows 8.1 for your desktop instead of 7?
Smile.
Smile not this time Wayne.
I'm not entirely sure my desktop and 7 will get along. there are a few things that MS says wont work. I don't remember. didn't you say that wasn't a deffinit?
The external video card and the SB Live Value.
The on-board video and sound of my (Asus P4 800E)are shot so those aren't options.
The rest of the motherboard works fine.
I have plenty of Ram (4GB on that system)
My external video is better than the internal card was anyway, it has 128MB of ram on it)
Trust me. Neither of my parents has the desire nor the patience to help me with this. We're very close, but Mom knows nothing about computers, other than playing with her iPad from time to time, and doesn't even want to hear about them, and Joanie just does the absolute basics with them (checking and sending e-mail, wordprocessing, paying bills, and occasionally looking up something online.) Lee is a much better option, despite him being far away. He's willing to learn, has installed Windows several times, and is also one of the two people working on my DOS machine. It sounds as if he'll have no problem here.
I ran Microsoft Security Essentials, but have no idea how to check the results. Regardless, it didn't change things. It says that I'm connected to the network but not to the internet. I tried ipconfig, or whatever the command was from that other forum where they were having the same problem, and got the message that it's not a valid command. I also couldn't flush the dns. I went into diagnostics and was able to see the ip and dns settings, but it's like a foreign language to me. There was a message saying that resetting the router or modem might help, but when I asked Mom, she said that there are a lot of things in the way, so she can't even get to it right now. This means that, yesterday, she didn't actually unplug the cables. I guess she just turned the power off. I wonder if it would help to have Verizon reset things in the office? I know they did that once.
if you are gonna reset them, reset both.
is your router and modom two seprit boxes? if so, try unplugging both and plugging them back in. wait and see what happens.
Have you tried malwarebytes?
MS wont get everything, but its a good start.
I can't tell you anything about the router/modem. It's downstairs and I'e never seen it. I think the old one was a combo, but even then, I never checked it out. Like I said, we can't even get to it right now. Maybe, Mom can on Monday.
I haven't used Malwarebytes on this machine. That's a good idea. but are they still accessible and free? I am also subscribed to something called PCMatic, but I've heard mixed results on that. If I uninstall MSE, can I reinstall it, and can I use Malwarebyteswithout unstalling MSE?
John. If you rerun the test for compatibility, you’ll know.
Next, if your external video card isn’t important, or is worth upgrading, and that is your only issue, change it.
Sometimes the thing that come up in the report don’t matter, depending on what they are.
Like programs you can upgrade or get new.
Hard ware is a bit trickier, but as I’ve said, it depends on that hard ware.
Now, on the computer that won’t connect to the internet.
I have a couple things that may fix it.
First, the router is working fine, due to the computer being connected to the network, and you say other devices get online, so no need to dig it out.
If you go to your systems trey, and find the network name hit enter.
The next thing you’ll find is troubleshoot problems.
If you click that on and follow the prompts, it might fix the issue that is blocking access.
You might try resetting up the connection.
Open IE.
Wight Jaws, I use Alt T for tools. Arrow up once to internet options.
Hit enter and control tab over to connections page.
Again follow the prompts.
Now, if the machine was online before, and you were fooling with the drivers in earlier post, did you remove anything, like the wireless drivers?
If so, find out what the machine has and put them back.
Last, if you have no support, ask someone to take you over to office depot, or BestBuy. You have both these places.
Office Depot will clean and reset your machine for about $50, and you'll know the work is done properly.
You'll need to put the NVDA, or whatever back, but you'll be set.
John, I forgot to add. On the external video card. Go to the company website that makes it, and locate the latest drivers for the model you have. If they now have updated drivers, that fixes the compatible issue, or any other hard wear issues for that matter.
It is harder to locate items used by the computer builder, because sometimes these are generic, so you have to go to that builders site to see if they have updated drivers for your computer model, or serial number.
Tonight, I was talking with my neighbour, and explaining what happened. Sure enough, she had the same problem. Somehow, her machine was connecting to a network but not the internet. So her son unplugged the modem and then plugged it back in and it worked! I told Mom, and asked if she could try it, thinking she would do so on Monday. But she did it tonight, and now, my wireless is back on my 7 machine! Even on XP, the connection kept breaking, so I knew it wasn't the computer. I'm just glad that we figured it out. *smile* But I'm still going for that $10 plan if I can get it. It will make things much easier should anything like this happen again.
Oh ok wayne I didn't think of that.
I know the Barenger USB sound card didn't work with the MS drivers... I had to go and get the actual drivers from barenger.
It isn't the software I'm worried about. it is the hardware. Upgrading those two pieces of hardware wont be a huge deal if its something I have to do.
I'll make sure to have my travel laptop with me before I even think of touching that computer. This way if I do have to upgrade something, I wont be totally stuck without something to use.
Tiff, you don't need to uninstall MSSE before installing/using malwarebytes. it is free to use, though advanced features are at a premium.
You don't need the advanced features for what your doing. you'll pay $40 to send your computer back and forth to lee. Your turnaround may be faster if you do what wayne suggests and use office Depo.
I'd avoid best buy. they can be very expensive.
Give malwarebytes a try before you go and take that thing anyware.
Great tiff! i'm glad my suggestion helped you!
There were other problems you are having with the 7 computer though right? If so use malwarebytes and try to fix it.
Wayne, my desktop is a custem whitebox.
So goin to the companies website for the video card is probably the best idea if it doesn't work when I install 7.
It is standard procedure to unplug and plug the modem back up. She already knew this. *smile*
She posted as much, so I assumed she could try a couple other methods, so I discount the neighbor. Plus she was posting?
No matter. The windows 7 computer will never work correctly until you solve it's glitches. It is not Windows 7's fault, no matter how hard you want to blame the OS.
I didn't realize it was only that device that was having problems with the wireless.
What wayne said is correct. if it was a problem with your modom/router setup, then all the devices on your network would be having problems.
I also hole heartedly agree with him. Its not the OS that is the problem. Its either spyware, software drivers, or a hardware issue. that's my guesses in that order.
personally i'd do malwarebytes first and fix all that if there are any problems.
Wayne isn't there a way to have W7 search for all neded drivers? its the only other thing I can come up with.
if that doesn't work, then do a factory reset.
If that doesn't work then its hardware issues.
at least that's the steps i'd take , and in that exact order.
maybe I like doing this too much? smile.
As I've said several times, I didn't just have problems with the 7 machine when it came to the internet. It worked on XP, but just barely, and often went out. This started when the power was first turned off. But now, everything works, which is good. The sound issue on 7 that I mentioned also seems to have disappeared. At least, it hasn't done it in the last few days. The other issues weren't related to the computer, but to software and to Windows 7 itself. NVDA and Firefox have been getting along, but I'm not sure if it's a temporary fix or if the constant "unknown" when I tab and shift tab through links has really been resolved. I still get the "task switching" nonsense from time to time, and was told that this has to do with how 7 handles it as opposed to XP. I forget exactly what was said, but this one definitely comes from a change in the operating system.
I don't like doing any of this. Not on Windows machines anyway. It drives me crazy! I just want things to work, and see no need to fix what's not broken and to complicate things that work correctly in the first place.
tiff, sometimes puters can be a pain in the ass.
Usually not one with Windows 7 that is properly configured though. Smoothest running beast I've ever used or worked on.
They keep themselves updated and often times will fix small glitches even.
Mostly people like me just monitor them to see if they are doing my job. Smile.
Smile. I hear ya.
I've found Windows 7 to work remarkably well.
XP needed what I call baby sitting. lol
How do i change the power settings from within the advanced tabvs of my power plan?
I cant seem to find a way to tell W7 about turning off the hard drive, the wireless , etc.
I can view what each plan has set, but don't see a way to change it.
Please somebody tell me how to change this be behavior?
Thanks!
Hi JH_Radio,
On my copy of Windows 7, I have my power plan set to balanced which is a radio button. Next to it if I hit tab there's a link that says change the settings for the balanced plan. That should have the wifi and other advanced settings, though in your case the plan name might be different.
Yes and within that settings , there's another link to advanced settings. the advanced settings has a tree with different items in it such as hard drive, internet explorer, Wi-Fi etc. Its sho those settings that I cant find a wayh to change with Jaws15.
Ok, I talked to FS who didn't see a way either.
MS support provided me a way.
Once I get to the setting I want to change, I need to hit right arrow to open up the edit box to do the changing. when done, I need to hit the left arrow.
This closes the edit box. when done making all the changing, I need to hit alt+A to apply all the changes.
Why so fancy?
What is wrong with plain sleep?
When sleep the computer basicly shuts down, like a warm boot mode?
I understand the reasoning if you are a business, or have some security reasons, but at home?
what is wrong with plain sleep is i'm trying to back up all my files to crashPlan.
I only want it to sleep when I shut the lid of my computer, and that's how it set.
I don't want my hard drive turning off, ever.
if I shut the lid and it sleeps. that's fine.
I do have the display set to go off after 5 minutes when plugged in and 1 minute on battery.
Not that this laptop will probably ever get moved again.
What are the differences between sleep, hybernate and shut down?
And, how do you turn the computer back on with each of these?
Thanks.
Bob
Your's Bob is most likely set to factory.
Close the lid, it sleeps. Open it it is on.
Other than that you have to press the power button to wake it up, turn it on.
Press and hold the button for a short bit. You'll know when it is powering up.
Sleep is like having the computer resting, but not actually shut down.
When you wake it from sleep, if you don't have a password assigned, everything you were doing is still there and ready to go.
Example, if you had Skype running, Skype will be running.
If you had your email open, it will still be open where you left off.
Working on a file, that file is still at the place you left it.
When you shut down, you close everything, and the computer boots fresh.
Like start up on XP.
Okay John, I got you, but it seems a waste of power generally to set sleep like that.
Why not just leave it on period? Lol
The monitor is off, so.
what if i'm recording something.
I don't want it to fall asleep in the middle of that.
the biggest thing for me right now is getting this massive amount of data backed up.
If it sleeps nothing gets backed up.
besides. I just want to control it. not have it control me.... lol
Bob, this will give a more detailed answer than what Wayne gave to your question about the differences between sleep and hibernate.
http://www.howtogeek.com/102897/whats-the-difference-between-sleep-and-hibernate-in-windows/
Yair. Control! I understand. A man must feel in control!
Now if you just left it on? Smile.
But I understand.
I have some issues (well, more like misunderstandings) with windows/7, speech programs, etc.), however, this is Tifinitza's topic, and if she has other issues going on, I'll step aside.
But, until then ...
Speaking of power, I'm like John, I like the power always on, unless I don't want it on (power to the power people).
I set up a power plan, is it active just by setting it up? How do you know?
I have a program called autohotkey which on my xp runs all the time. But, I can't get it to run all the time on the laptop (windows 7 machine. How do I achieve this?
Guess that's enough for now.
Bob
read what I said about setting the advanced power settings.
that's the stuff you'll wanna change .
as for a this bein'g tiff's topic, my thought is if its an issue with windows 7 , why not post it here instead of having thousands of topics with similar subject lines
I agree. We should all help each other. Please don't feel that you can't share your issues here. It's a good way for everyone to learn. *smile*
I'm a man with a reasonable fast internet connection. It use to be fastest, but in my area, it has been outstripped, but is still plenty fast.
Saying that, my computers don't need to run anything all the time simply because when I turn them on, or bring them home, they connect and upload/download whatever like now.
But you power control freaks, enjoy all that fancy.
Wayne, the way I see it is, my power button is just a keystroke away. If I want the computer off, I'll turn it off.
Now battery, that's a different issue.
On windows/xp if I wanted a program to run after I logged on, I put it in the startup folder. I haven't seen any such folder in windows/7.
However, I did find the "task scheduler" very accomodating. I could schedule my program "autohotkey" to run when the system starts up.
Seems to work fine.
I'm having some issues with libraries in 7 and folders in xp. I can't get a handle on the differences.
Any help?
Bob
what exactly are you trying to do that you cant do, bob?
I don't have an answer for copy pass as I've never used that ever in XP.
Yes, describe what you want to do. Libraries, and folders are not one in the same.
The library is like a shortcut to the actual folder, so basicly, you are arranging your bookshelve titles to direct you to the book in the basement.
That is the best way I can think to describe it.
You can have several of these libraries over just folders in XP.
You can still get directly to your fonders, sure, but maybe you want all your Jazz music in the library, so all you are tapping is the Jazz, not the music folder.
As to battery, your computer never goes out you said, so just leave it plugged up and on just like a desktop.
Over charging is not a problem on new laptops as it once was.
Call your tech department and ask about it, and they'll explain how it should work on your specific computer.
The startup is in exactly the same place it was on XP.
Type Startup in the search box.
Personally, I try to keep my startup shit to a minimum.
Maybe this isn't a problem on newer hardware, but having all this stuff start with windows just makes it boot slower. besides (and this may just be a personal thing) , I don't always want to start the browser and email and everything else when I boot the computer.
the way W7 handles startup is much better than XP
Hey wayne, so does this mean I could create a shortcut to a folder on my external drive on my desktop, then somehow make that show as a library?
Yes. On the folder on the external drive press the applications key.
Arrow until you hear add to library, and add it to the one you want.
In that library either go to the folder name, copy and put it on your desktop, or again, hit the applications key, get to send to right arrow, go down and say desktop.
That is a general description, but you'll get it once you start.
Also Bob, it is the same process you used to change them with XP.
In that search box on the start Menu type
Msconfig
Use the same controls to navigate it. Control tab, tab, and shift tab.
Here is an article on more options.
http://www.ehow.com/how_5215115_change-startup-programs-windows-7.html
Another good option is to use CCleaner
they have a very nice startup applit too. its under tools.
He wishes to get stuff on his start, not off though.
Also, I forgot to say, you can create as many libraries as you want, so instead of putting separate files on your desktop, put the library link on there. Seems neater organization to me.
Maybe I want to catalog all my Jazz music, so I create a Jazz library.
When I want to just check out all the stuff I have related, music, videos, articles, or whatever, I click on my Jazz link on my desktop, and no matter where the files are located, I've got them all in my jazz library.
but i'm still confused on how to create the jaz library.
or whatever library.
Here is how I create a library.
Let me explain a bit first. I’m talking Windows 7. 8 has library feature as well, but they are hidden by default.
In windows 7 you see the library, and default will have documents, music, videos, and photos.
These are sub libraries, or the shortcuts to the actual file folder.
These are inside a larger folder, or library.
To create a main library, press the left arrow to close this big folder. You hear library closed.
Press the application key, or get in that menu. Arrow down until you find new, and right arrow. You’ll hear library.
To create a sub library inside the main larger library folder, instead of closing it with the left arrow, just follow the same steps, and you’ll create a sub library.
You can name them anything you like, and arrange the sub libraries in main libraries anyway you want.
Put the shortcut on the desktop to the main library, or libraries, on the desktop for neatness, then you can go see all your sub libraries.
You can always set everything back to defaults, just arrow down and select that.
It will ask if you want to delete the created ones.
Your files will remain on the computer, even if you delete the library.
Remember, these are simply places to arrange shortcuts to the actual files.
I hope this helps.
ok so say I had recepees that I wanted to save.
I could create a recepees library right?
and within there I could have things such as
meets, veggies, etc.
If I open the meets library from within the recepees libraries, i'd could then create more things such as chickens, pork, beif, etc.
If I open the chickens library, I could have files for cutless, BBQ, fried, etc.
if I opened the veggies libraries I could have different files for things that pertained to veggies right?
but here's what confuses me.
what is the point of a library? and how is this different than folders on windows XP?
One advantage with the library is that I can copy my entire swoffs of libraries onto a USB thumb drive. Then I could upgrade my desktop, and paste the contents of the USB drive onto my desktop system, and have access to the same libraries and files as I do on my laptop. is this correct?
I remember doing this with my dad when we did a fresh install, so he wouldn't lose all his files and things.
Isn't that what the easy transfer wizard does? It copies things such as favorites and libraries to a USB drive so you can take it with you and put it on a different box?
Is that why people use libraries? so they can easily copy them a or back them up? or is there another reason why libraries are used tht t that I'm unaware of.
Now this brings up another interesting point and I'm curious if this can be done.
Let's say I'm on my desktop (my main pc) and I create a library for stuff I wanna take on the road.
I put any file in there that I wanna be sure goes with me when I travel.
Is there a way that I can somehow sync this between my desktop and that travel laptop that I'm getting?
Might I be able to use a USB cable, and have it do something like what Active sync used to do?
I wouldn't want all my files to go with me, but just certain ones.
The ones I wanted to go with me I could put on the "On the road" library, only that library and its contents would come with me..
Maybe I can do this without the use of a thumb drive, as the library I created would be bigger than the thumb drives I have.
it would be bigger than the thumb drive, but not so big as to totally fill up my travel laptop SSD.
I invision something that I plug a cable in, open this program, choose sync this one library and its all done in one step.
I hope i'm making sense here. Sorry for the longish wording , but I do wana be very clear with saying exactly what I'm looking to do.
Thanks for all help in advance!
Radio, basicly, library and foulder are t he same. Just different name for different OS, but the concept and principle doesn't change.
For original poster, your My Document will most likely be whatever name you set your computer is, or whatever account you log in from. For example, if your computer is Tifany, you will find that instead of having My Computer, My Document etc on XP, you will have Computer, Tifany, etc etc. Just different name and outlook, but honestly, it doesn't change that much.
Yes, files are files.
The advantage of libraries, or so I think, are organization of files that are spread out over different types.
I've got music, in my music folder. I have videos, in the video folder, and I have documents in the document folder.
Maybe I had these items on the main drive of my computer, and 2 other protable drives that are connected.
I want anything and everthing Jazz related on my main drive in an easy to get to place, so I create the Jazz library.
Now I can put shortcuts in that library for things that are all over the place, and never move the files from there original places.
Because the library is full of shortcuts, copying it and taking it won't help, because these are shortcuts, not files.
If 2 windows 7 machines are on the same network, you use what is called home group.
Home group allows you to use files on say your desktop from your laptop in the next room and vice versa, depending on how you set the group up.
You have to give permission on say the desktop for the laptop to access the desktop files.
I have both a desktop and laptop. When at home I can play the music on my main desktop sitting in my kitchen using my laptop.
I can open documents on my desktop, and such things as well.
For what you want to do, use files from one machine on a travel machine is called remote desktop, and that is another long story.
Say you have the desktop running at home and want to access files on it with your new laptop from anyplace you have an internet connection, this is possible.
Copying files is still the same as it was with XP.
The remote desktop requires pro versions of the OS.
I haven't answered all your questions, because I would have to post lots, but read up on this, and you'll understand.
blbobby, in XP, if I wanted a program to run at startup, I just checked the boxes in the msconfig file, under startup. I think 7 has something like that as well.
forereel, I've never really seen libraries (except in programming) in XP, but I did see a folder with that name in 7. Now that you've explained it, it still seems like another needless feature. Why not just create a shortcut to a folder, put it on the desktop, and if you're really in a hurry, make a hotkey for it? It sounds like this is for people who are lazy or who just don't know how to organise. In your example, it would make more sense to just have a jazz folder. All of my folders are organised by subject, and most contain subfolders related to the original topic. That way, I always know where to find things, and I can still create shortcuts and hotkeys to those subfolders.
Well shit I don't have pro versions .
just two copies of home premium.
I could use something like LogMeIn Pro to view my desktop remotely from the web, but this would mean that i'd need to keep my desktop running at all times. I don't wana do that.
what would happen if I put the two computers together using a USB cable ?
You'd need a program that transferred the files.
It is just a sighted thing.
Your dad could help.
You probably could do it, but you'd need some practice, so if you want it right the first time, you need help.
Libraries are useful if you don't want lots of stuff on your desktop.
Next, if you have several drive sources for these files, libraries help when you connect these portable drives back to the computer after taking them with you.
Maybe you have 2 or 3 hard drives and the main drive. A library can make organization easier.
If your house hold draws from one main system, libraries are nice as well.
You can allow access to some, and not to others.
I guess it all depends on the person if libraries are worth setting up.
I haven't read the more than 100 posts under this topic but I just wanted to weigh in and say that my XP computer finally died (it was a refurbished machine and never that good anyway) so I finally had to break down and buy a Windows 7 laptop. I have to say it's only been a couple days, but I'm not crazy about 7. I liked having a "my documents" folder on my desktop with XP and find this library thing cumbersome to deal with. I also don't like the way WORD 2013 is set up as opposed to my old Word 2003. I can't seem to just press control o to open a file and start typing the name of the file I want. I have to tab through all the files and enter on the one I want. I guess I'll get used to it.
There is in fact a "My documents" folder within your user folder. You can make a chortcut for it on the desktop. When you hit enter, it'll then open like it used to.
Here are the steps to do this:
1. Hit your windows key to bring up the start menu.
2. type in C:Users .
3. nabigate to your user name and hit enter to open it.
4. Hit M until you hear My Documents
5. hit your applications key or Shift+F10 if you don't have an aplications key. You'll have a menu of options here.
Arrow down in this menu until you reach the "Send to" option and hit enter to bring up this submenu.
Select "Desktop (Create shortcut)" and you'll now have a shortcut to your "My Documents" folder on the desktop.
you know... I don't like this.ok damn zone board topic is taking out what I typed!
under step 2, you want to type in c : backslash users. I don't know why but whenever I put a backslash in here it doesn't come out when I go to read it back after posting the message. so I type the word backslash so you know what key to hit on your keyboard.
John, thank you so much. I followed your steps and now I have my documents on my desktop. I really appreciate the clear step by step instructions.
Hi Becky.
As you can see, if you read the one hundred odd messages in this topic,
I too have a new laptop. So far, I've managed to avoid the libraries. Everything seems to go under my UserName on my c drive, and that's a good thing, I think.
Anyway, if I can help out in anyway, don't hesitate to ask.
Bob
Any time, glad to help , becky.
I cant help with office as I don't even have/use office.
I didn't like windows 7 when I first got it, either, but I wouldn't go back to anything else.
so, hang in there. it'll take some getting used to, but patience, and being unafraid to ask for help, will go a long way.
I got Windows 7 and loved it from the start.
Office is just a little different, but you'll get that too.
If you know the name of something you are looking for, just type that in your search box.
You can hide the libraries if you want. Read my post on files.
Good directions John.
You can get there faster however.
Ah, computers, lots of ways to do things. Smile.
you can get their faster than I said?
how ?
Becky you might check this page...
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-new-library
Becky probably wants them fiden.
I'd press the windows key.
You have the search box showing.
Arrow right You see your name.
If you click it, you can find your documents, or just go down. Documents, music, whatever.
That is off the top of my head.
After that, you follow your directions to turn on the menu to add the link to the desktop, of you can just copy "documents" and paste it on the desktop.
I was just working on a 7 machine, should have read this first. Lol
when i arrow right all i see is the shut down split butten.
And when you arrow down once?
Let me look. I'm going to call somthe person I just finished working with and have them tell me.
It is right there however.
Speaking of that shutdown split button, what the hell does split mean? I shut it down that way once and it shut down pretty quickly. The second time JAWS shut down right away,, but I could tell the laptop was still on. I couldn't get JAWS TO talk, so after waiting several minutes I just turned the computer the rest of the way off with the power button.
thanks for that tip who ever posted to arrow right and go past shut down. Funny thing I never knew that was there lol. I have been using windows7 for about 6 years lol.

Here are some thoughts about Windows 7/8.
If you think it will be hard and difficult, it will be.
Microsoft, at least as we are concerned, has kept Windows basics intact, and these are keystrokes.
Blind people navigate with their keyboards.
Like the documents thing I took a look, and also ask a friend to take a look for me, or just tell me how she got there.
She uses the windows key. That places her on the search box. Tab once and you see your name, or admin, whatever the computer was set with.
Type the letter D, and you are on documents.
In fact, typing the first letter of anything after passing the search box will take you there. Computer. Control Panel. Music. Video.
Using the search box will take you there, or give you suggestions.
The other way I was describing is to again press windows key, arrow right once, and down.
If you go right once, you see the power options. Shut down, sleep, restart, but arrow down and you’ll find the other things.
John’s direction after that as to putting the shortcuts on your desktop work.
I’d take some time and look at things.
Tab, shift tab. Right and left arrows. Up and down arrows.
Open things with the enter key, or just right arrow.
Close they left arrow.
You can learn much about the layout just looking through it.
Hope this helps adjustment.
The sutdown button is shutdown.
Sometimes windows will get stuck, and you can't see that, so you have to either hit enter to shut it down, or use the power button.
Don't do it right away, because Windows could be installing updates or something, so let it run a bit.
It gets stuck for varying reasons.
Okay, so after trying to get use to my new computer running Windows 7, I noticed that I have a 64-bit version. However, as I understand it, you can get either a 32-bit version of JAWS or a 64-bit version of JAWS. How can I tell which version I currently have on my computer? I have been having nothing but headaches since I started using this computer, and I am wondering if having the wrong bit version of JAWS would make any difference in my experience in using the computer. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
You can run 32 bit software on a 64 bit computer.
I don't know if your performance would suffer with Jaws or not if you installed the wrong version.
I'm not even sure it would install.
You could download the 64 bit version, of the previous version and run this as a demo.
Remove the current version using add and remove, but make sure you only remove Jaws, don't remove the settings or serial key.
Reinstall the 64 bit version of your current Jaws, and you'll know.
If you didn't install Jaws, I'm sure the person that did installed the correct version however.
You should ask FS what the result would be, before you go through this, if knowone else post that knows.
Sounds rather confusing to me. I was just wondering if this could possibly be causing one of the issues I am having with this computer. If the person who installed JAWS does not know anything about accessibility or the fact that there is both a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version of JAWS, then how could I know that it was installed correctly? Especially when this person claimed that a Microsoft Word like program was accessible with JAWS and yet I still cannot use it?
I guess I am just frustrated that this computer does not seem to work in the same way as other computers I have used that have Windows 7 installed on them. I could use these other computers just fine, but this one just seems to be a real pain in the ass.
Well how about you start telling us what exactly it is doing that it doesnt' do on other computers?
we can then best trouble shoot it.
What program is the person that did the install I did they ut put on t your puter for your word stuff?
Ok wayne now I see how to get to your user stuff.
both ways that you put r from your friend do exactly what you said s smile.
Now what is the best way to get to computer?
If I start typing in computer in the search box I never get to it, but only to component services. by the time I am finished typing the word computer I hear computer management. is there a way to get to computer so I can open it to see my drives etc from within that search box?
Sure. arrow one down past the search box, type the letter C, until you hear it.
Put it on your desktop. Smile.
I agree with John, say what the issue is, and someone here may be able to help.
You know, you had explained this was a used computer.
I suggested to you to have the tech put it back to factory settings.
You told me in private chat, your mother gave it to you, and I'm assuming this tech person is professional.
Everyone doesn't know about accessibility, but if this person is working in a shop, he or she knows about installing 32 and 64 bit programs.
When a blind person received a used computer, that has been used before, and settings set, it is a good idea to just have it reset if you aren't savvy to fix your settings.
When you have this process done, you start at all default settings, accept for the settings, or programs the computer company installed.
Mainly, the machine is fresh.
Now, we are talking Windows 7, so the default setting allows you to put your Jaws disc in, and run the setup.
That way you know what you have, and how your Jaws was installed.
If the tech has time, have them do the install with you, in that, you download the version you want, and once it is talking, you will be able to complete the setup.
Now your computer is fresh other than hard wear issues.
If it has no hard wear issues, you are ready, and the machine will be setup just like you want it.
John, to get to your computer, once you're in the search box, tab once, then press the letter C. it's that simple.
As far as how to get to "my computer" I just use windows key plus the letter e. That's windows explorer, but it's as good as "my computer", the view and stuff is just set the way I like it.
I have office 2013 on here, but I haven't even tried it yet. Somehow, I suspect I'm going to have problems since I'm using jaws13.
Is anyone familiar with GwMicro's offer of window eyes for users of office 10 or better?
I installed it from their web site, and it came up in demo mode.
That, too, is for later investigation. Don't think I want to learn a new speech program on top of everything else.
Bob
Bob
Thanks chels, bob, and wayne!
I knew there had to be a faster way.
Office 2013 won't work with 13. You'd need 14/15.
You can also install 2010 if you have, or 2007. 2003 is not supported anymore.
I took a look at my original dropbox space.
It looks as if I started out with 250GB I’m not up to 725GB due to referrals.
You have to know people in order to get referrals don't you?
Jaws 32 bit will not install on a 64 bit windows computer.
I have already shared my specifics with various people, and all I get are different answers that only seem to confuse me. I have already stated that taking the computer back to the computer tech who worked on it is not an option. It was a real hassle the first time around, and it is something I am not willing to do again. It was a real pain being without a computer for two whole weeks, and I really do not want to experience this again.
The Microsoft office like program installed on my computer is called King Soft. It includes programs like Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. When I tried to use the program that is like Microsoft Word, I was not able to use it with JAWS, and thus, I believe it is not a program that can work with JAWS. The program is free which is why I guess the computer tech either put it on this machine or left it on the machine.
When I use Internet Explorer, JAWS is really chatty when I type something in the address bar. It keeps saying every character and then words after typing a character when I have JAWS set to read only words. I also had a problem where there was a default myspace address that would appear after typing the www part of a web address in the address bar. However, I may have figured out how to solve this problem.
However, the one thing I cannot figure out is why JAWS will not let me use the JAWS cursor when using Internet Explorer. For the most part this is not much of a prolem, but I have encountered times when it has come in handy, so I would like to figure out a way to be able to use it for the times when I would like to be able to use it. Someone told me that if you install the wrong bit version of JAWS that it makes it act differently, so that is why I was trying to figure out what bit version I had of Windows and JAWS to make sure I had the correct version of JAWS for my computer.
And the last thing that mystifies me is that Internet Explorer is listed twice when I read through the programs list from the start menu. One listing has 64-bit after it while the second listing does not. Does this mean I have two different bit versions of Internet Explorer on my computer, and if so, how can I delete one of them if it is just taking up space on my hard drive? My hard drive is not that big, so I am trying to use it as efficiently
as possible.
My computer has Windows 7 home premium 64-bit with JAWS 15 and Internet Explorer 9. Hopefully I have provided enough specifics for anyone who would like to help me solve my computer issues. Sometimes I just want to trow this machine out the window and go back to using my old XP machine, but I know that is not an option. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
it'd be nice if i could somehow remote into your coputer to attempt to fix it... but here are a few thoughts.
first, uninstall that k king soft thing.
are you just looking for a word type program or do you need other stuff?
Have you tried taking a look to see if you have spyware ?
Why would the computer repair shop give me a computer with spyware on it? Seems to me like this would be bad for business.
I already know what I can do as far as the Microsoft Office like programs are concerned. It is just the rest of the things that I am not so sure about.
No spyware.
Let’s start out with internet explorer. Windows 7 offered both 64 and 32 bit explorer because some sites were working better with 32 at the time.
It doesn’t take up much space, so I’d leave it.
If you have a current version of Jaws, you can use either 32 or 64 bit, but 64 is working nicely now.
Internet explorer gives you the option so suggesting as you type addresses. This can be changed, but you say you have that figured out.
The office program as you know is not accessible. I’d ditch that, and get one that is.
I personally use Microsoft Office, but there are others.
Someone posted exactly as I suspected. The 32 bit version will not install on the 64 bit machine, so that isn’t your issue.
I don’t understand why taking it back is not an option, but I suggest others.
Office Depot has a program called Tech Teapot, and it isn’t expensive.
FS will fix your Jaws issues, so call them for your questions on the cursor.
If you want to know how to fix the suggesting issue, say and I'll post that.
No, I do not have all of that figured out. The only thing I have been able to figure out was how to get rid of the myspace address that kept coming up as I typed the www part of a web aggress in the address bar. JAWS is still way too chatty when typing in the address bar even though I have JAWS set to say only words. Perhaps disabling the suggesting feature would help fix this, so steps on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.
Taking the computer back to the repair shop is not really an option because it is just too compicated by having a third person involved. If I had some way where I could take the computer directly to the repair shop myself and deal with them directly, then maybe I would consider it. But getting my mom involved in this process just makes things too complicated for me. And since the computer repair shop is located in a vary small town about a good half an hour away with no public transportation, there is really no way for me to get to it without going through my mom.
Would upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer help in any way with the JAWS cursor issue? I have not tried this yet because I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out the 32-bit verses the 64-bit stuff out. I guess I am just wondering what kind of difference it makes running an older version of Internet Explorer with the latest version of JAWS.
I hope this makes sense to you and helps clarify things a bit. Again, any advice or information anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
The 32 bit and the 64 bit both are new. Everyone doesn't have a 64 bit machine, so Microsoft provides both versions.
Jaws has caught up.
If you don't have 14 latest, use the 32 bit version. Just easier.
Might be best to just to use the 32 bit version all the time.
I'll post the suggestion fix.
As I said earlier, I created my own documents file, before I knew about these permissions and how to deal with them. I simply made a shortcut and then a hotkey for it. So now, whenever I press alt-ctrl-d, I get to my documents. I did the same with my music folder. That said, I didn't know the trick about the start menu and arrowing down, nor that I could find things by their letters. I'm still having issues with the "task switching" and restarting NVDA doesn't help. Thankfully, the "unknown" messages seem to have disappeared, or at least, they're not as frequent.
Thank you for responding to my post For Real, but I am only more confused. How can I possibly use a 32-bit Windows7 machine when I have a 64-bit Windows 7 machine? I do not believe you can interchange between these two diferent operating systems. However, if you are talking about using the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer verses the 64-bit Internet Explorer, it really does not matter which one I use as i encounter the same problems regardless of which one I use. In either case, I cannot use the JAWS cursor, and the address bar is too chatty despite the fact that I have JAWS set to only words. however, since I am running Internet Explorer 9 when I believe there is now an Internet Explorer 11 out there, I did not know if anyone would know if updating to Internet Explorer 11 would make any difference in my experience while using JAWS 15.
you have a 64-bit version of the OS. 64-bit versions can run either 32-bit or 64-bit programs.
If you have a 32-bit board s and OS though, you cant run 64-bit on a 32--bit OS>
i'll make it simpler. 64-bit ccan run both.
32-bit runs only 32-bit.
I suggest you use 64-bit everything.
IE11 will work fine fo you and jaws. if you don't like it you can always downgrade to IE10.
Um, okay then. Earlier posts say that you cannot run 32-bit JAWS on a 64-bit computer though. So apparently either there are exceptions to the rule you just mentioned, or what the other post said was wrong. and if I upgrade to Internet Explorer11, will it do anything to solve my JAWS cursor problem? I do not see how I could just down grade back to Internet Explorer 10 when this version is not even installed on my computer.
Seriously, I am just more confused. All I really want to be able to do is to be able to use the JAWS cursor while using internet Explorer, and for the address bar to stop being so chatty when I have JAWS set to say only words. So far I have yet to see any solutions besides contacting Freedom Scientific to fix these problems.
i know what starfly said but there is no reason why jaws 32-bit wont install on a 64-bit box.
it may fix your problems ... i honestly don't know.
it'll be able to go back to IE10 because it'll install all the stuff for IE10 before installing it for 11.
i have another idea too.
have you done a jaws repair ?
nobody thought to suggest that to you including me.
if you don't know how to do that let me know and i'll help.
Hmm, okay, so if I could install a 32-bit JAWS on my computer, then could it be causing my problems? And no, I have never even heard of a JAWS repair before, and I do not see anything about it from a quick glance through the menus. Although, I do not know if this would make a difference or not, but the JAWS disk my mom gave the computer tech was for JAWS 14, but my computer has JAWS 15 on it. Could this make any difference with anything? I am just rather perplexed by my problem as I have never seen it when using a Windows 7 computer before.
it shouldn't cause your problems.
here's what you do.
download jaws 15 and run the installer. one option that will come up is to repair jaws.
let it repair it. leave all your user settings and see if this fixes the problem. report back.
So I download JAWS 15 even though it is already installed on my computer? Just making sure I am understanding you correctly.
Yes. that's exactly what you do. then you run the installer.
that's when it'll come up with some option (which repair jaws) is one of them.
But how do I know which one to download though? The problem is that I am really not sure if I am running the 32-bit JAWS or the 64-bit JAWS on my computer. I thought since someone stated that you could not run 32-bit JAWS on a 64-bit computer that the issue was settled. But if you are saying otherwise, then there really is no way to know for sure without contacting Freedom Scientific.
how about you do a total uninstall, uninstall the entire thing including all your user settings.
download the 64-bit version and install it.
then you'll know you have 64-bit and its a clean version of jaws.
do you know how to do this without sited help? or do you have some vision..
becky asked me privately how to put the shortcuts for IE and her outlook on her desktop and since her sounds aren't working, asked me to paste them here on this board so here goes. yep ok this is easy.
1. go to the start menu and type internet explorer (it'll come upas you are typing it.
2. hit aplications key and go to the send to submenu. Hit enter and find send to desktop (create shortcut).
hit enter and there you go.
This should work the sane for outlook.
here are the steps for that.
I don't know if this wil work as i don't have nor use outlook, but.
1. go to start menu. start typing outlook. when you hear Outlook,
2. hit the aplications key and go to the send to submenu. Hit enter and select send to desktop (create shortcut) and that should be on your desktop too.
damn good thing i copied the messaged i PQN'd her, as a just in case measure.
But then what happens when I find out that the version I paid for was the 32-bit version of JAWS and not the 64-bit version of JAWS? If I do what you suggest, and find out I paid for the 32-bit JAWS and not the 64-bit JAWS, then I believe I would be stuck in demo mode until I paid the full price of the new product since Freedom Scientific sells the 32-bit JAWS and the 64-bit JAWS as two different products. I am not quite sure if that is a risk I would want to take right now. I think I would ratehr wait until I could contact Freedom Scientific to find out for sure if I have the 32-bit JAWS or the 64-bit JAWS. I do not understand why they do not include this information with any product documentation or under the help menu.
wel you have 64 bit version of premium right?
it is not that FS makes it so that you cant use 32 and 64 bit versions.
it is that if you wanted to use say windows 7 pro or aultimit then you'd have to pay more for Jaws Pro if you didn't have it.
see there are two jaws. regular and pro.
regular will work for home premium.
download it from this link:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/jaws-downloads.asp
get jaws 15 64-bit.
do a total uninstall of your jaws. then install this 64-bit version that you ddownloaded.
Seriously, I am just more confused now. When I was on the Freedom Scientific website yesterday, there were different links for both 32-bit JAWS and 64-bit JAWS for both the standard JAWS and the Pro JAWS. Since they all have their own links, I would imagine they would sell them as individual products.
So right now I really do not want to download the 64-bit version if I have the 32-bit version as I am afraid I would lose my paid version of JAWS and would then be stuck with a demo instead. Feel free to disagree with my choice, but I really do not want to proceed any further until contacting Freedom Scientific.
And besides, For Real said there was something else he was going to post that might help me. I would like to see what he has to say before making any more decisions. Although, since I find all this stuff to be so confusing, I think I am going to call it good for tonight, and pick back up on my trouble shooting tomorrow. But feel free to keep posting.
ok i'll try again.
it doesn't matter what version of jaws you have on your system right now.
uninstall it.
download the 64-bit regular version, since you are running windows 7 home premium 64-bit and do a total clean install.
you cant go wrong with this practice. you'll have a completely new clean install of jaws, and then that's one less thing to take out of the equation of problems.
with this clean install anything that somehow got corrupted with jaws will no longer be corrupted since its a completely new and clean install.
I wouldn't tel you something that would leave you totally screwed.
To change auto complete settings in IE.
Press alt T to bring up the tools.
Arrow up to internet options and press enter.
Use control tab to move over to content page.
Tab down to auto complete settings and press enter.
Tab and uncheck all the things you don’t want until you get to okay.
Tab again until you are okay again. You are finished.
Of course it's that easy! Why did I not think of that in the first place? Now I just feel like some stupid idiot. Oh well, I guess you live and learn I guess.
Let me see if I can help John out.
When you purchased Jaws, you can use the 32 or 64 bit versions.
It doesn't matter if you have basic, or pro,.
Now, someone posted that the 32 bit version would not install on a 64 bit computer. I have not tried it, so can't say.
However, it is possible to run 32 bit software on a 64 bit computer.
Now, I also don't know if running a 32 bit version of Jaws on a 64 bit machine will hurt performance. I have stated that.
John explained again, that if you are not sure, reinstall Jaws, but make sure you download the 64 bit version of Jaws 15.
Now, Windows 7 will not allow you to install the downloaded version for a repair over the one that is already installed. You will receive a message telling you this program is already installed.
You have to remove Jaws, and reinstall it as John has explained.
You don't have to remove your settings though.
I explained how to do this using a demo version, so you have speech the whole time.
I honestly don't hink you have the wrong version, but reinstalling it will help, or might.
If you aren't up to the task, you will have to get FS, or sighted help, there is no way around that.
32 or 64 bit IE doesn't matter. You can use either one. IE 11 will work great, but may not fix your problems.
hmm. ok I didn't know that would happen when you tried to repair it, wayne.
I only suggested removing her user settings thinkin this would be a totally clean install. if there are custem scripts , you can install them again.
if you have windows 7 home premium, don't you have to use the non-pro version of jaws wayne?
The pro version of Jaws can be installed on regular or pro Windows. The regular version of Jaws cannot be installed on the pro version of Windows, however.
The downloads, or disc install are just programs. What makes Jaws basic or pro is when you put in your 20 digit code.
If you have purchased pro it unlocks these features, if not, it doesn't.
So downloading or installing from the disc just require you install the bit version for your machine.
Removing her setting would be a good idea, I do agree, but not necessary.
When installing Jaws just install it regular not custom.
I thought I said all that wayne.
smile.
Hmm, so if you get a CD with JAWS on it to install on your computer, does it come with both the 32-bit JAWS and the 64-bit JAWS, and it just automatically installs the one you need for your computer then? I am still finding this part of things to be rather confusing. But it is getting late, and I have been working on this for a while now, so maybe all I really need is just a fresh start in the morning.
yes there is one disk.
it detects which version of the OS you have installed and goes from there.
They should make it this way in the download on the web too.
Ah, now I understand. I thought since there were different links for downloading the 32-bit JAWS and the 64-bit JAWS on the website that there would also be different disks for these as well. But if they both come on the CD then there really is no need to worry about it then. Seriously, did they really have to make things so confusing for me? This has only given me a really bad headache!
they have to do this for the web.
I right now have a 32 bit system, so also have a 32-bit version of windows 7 installed. if I downloaded the 64 bit version of jaws it would not work for my 32 bit system.
I know it is possible to include some way to detect which version (32 or 64 bit)of the OS is installed but FS hasn't done that and I don't know why.
If they did this in a future jaws upgrade, you could just download one installer from the web, run it, and have it do what it needs to do automaticly.
John, thank you. I now have Outlook and Internet Explorer on my desk top. I don't know why, but I hardly ever think to use the application key unless I know specifically to do so for certain tasks. And now I know. Thanks again.
And now I suppose I have to ask on the board where you ask questions why my sounds are gone.
your welcome.
maybe you muted them in your mixer?
if you have no idea how to check let me know and i'll let you know how to do so.
becky something else
look at the two questions you asked and the similar answer.
it is pretty much the same thing for anything you'd wanna put on your desktop as a shortcut.
find it, use aplications key , go to send to sub menu, then to desktop (Create shortcut)
John, yes, I figured out the answers for both problems regarding putting things on my desktop were similar.
I have no idea how I could have muted sounds or how to fix it. I did start another topic about this problem though since it is really off topic here.
as far as i'm concerned, its not off topic.
ok so here's what you do.
insert+f11 bring up the system trey.
hit s for speakers and hit enter.
from the sub menu, choose open volume mixer.
once it opens
tab until you get to the mute speakers butten and hit space on that butten. see if the sounds change. If that doesn't work, check that mixer for your aplications file for jaws.
note: any program you have open has its own volume setting, so if there are any other sounds you want lower or louder, feel free to change all that here.
ok guys now i'm stuck.
So I know how to get to the action center to check messages to see what's not right with my puter.
I can see by exploring that there is drivers for my memory card reader.
when I view the messages, it says that it was unable to download th the drivers. it tried to do this twice march 28th and 29th.
how can I tell it to attempt the download of the drivers again?
I typed drivers in the start search box and came up with update drivers. it braught up my device manager. I told it to scan for hardware changes but it didn't come up with anything new. I didn't hear it was installing anything, and when I checked the action center messages are still there.
BTW, I just now found out that I even have a memory card reader on this puter after 8 years lol. I didn't even know I had one until w7 and it not getting the drivers by default.
this brings up a somewhat related question. what is this memory card reader thing?
Under that same message do you see "check for solutions?"
It will either fix it, or say it was unable to.
In that event, it depends on how much you were want to use the card reader.
Dell, and I think it is Dell, will have the drivers if available for Windows 7.
You'll need the service tag to obtain them.
Have you used the Dell site for finding drivers before?
John, I followed your instructions, but when I hit the spacebar on mute speakers button, it muted sound so that JAWS seemed to be turned off. So I hit it again and brought sound back on. I hear all other sounds just fine. It's just the sounds that ZoneBBS uses that are gone.
OK, as I stated recently on my board topic regarding zone sounds, through a private qn conversation, Wayne helped me figure out the problem. So thanks to Wayne and John for your help.
i know you and Wayne told me of the topic but I never did find it. I wasn't aware that it was just the sounds from this site, so just gave you instructions for the main sound. Yes it would mute jaws because that particular butten is the mute/unmute sounds for your entire system. I thought you may have been using a braille display to access your puter.
its a dell puter and no I haven't searched for drivers on that site.
where do I go for the check solutions wayne?
I used the jaws curcer to read the message and when I clicked on view details that's when I got the note about the driver.
I was able to get to the check for solutions for software that hadn't yet been reported as having problems from my system. this happened to bring up stuff for FS mirror driver which it didn't find a solution for.
I sent the info out to MS, and that's one of the 3 messages that is now gone.
The other two messages are the exact same message and both pertain to my memory card.
Actually I lied, I did look for drivers once when I fixed my sound when this computer ran XP. I think I may have got it from the dell site but not sure. its been ages.
I go to the systems trey.
Click on action center.
Click on trouble shooting.
Go to history.
Currently I have nothing in there, but you see the reports and you should find check for solutions.
I’ll have to look if you need more instructions, but you’ll find it.
I don't see it.
when I view history and even view the trouble shotter that was run as an admin, all I get is this...
Windows Network Diagnostics 3/30/2014 12:33:05 PM
I did go to the dsystem trey and told it to download the driver again but nothing appears to have happened.
It may not download the drivers, it will just store the messages.
To get the drivers, if available, get your service tag and get these via Dell, or if you can look in the system specs, learn the name of the card, and go to the company sight.
I'll bet if available, you'll have to get them from Dell.
Even if you don't have the tag, there is a tool on Dell that will find it, or you can search by system name.
well ever since I put the new ram in here 3 years ago, it reports my system as the wrong model number.
I don't know why.
sure wish I could fix it.
my Dell Model number is Inspiron E1705
If you didn't install Dell ram you changed the system properties, so it isn't the same system.
So just search for your Dell model number, not by service tab.
Your service tag will still work, but only if you put it in manually. The tool will see your system as something else.
I'd get my service tag, and search for the drivers for Windows 7 with this.
I'd not update all the drivers with the ones from Dell, but only the card drivers.
My reason for this, is Windows has already gotten what is required accept this one, so the ones installed now will be the most current.
If I wasn't using the card slot I'd disable it if I couldn't get current drivers.
ok i'm confused on two points.
first, what is a service tag anyway?
second, what do you mean by this: you changed the system properties, so it isn't the same system.
how isn't it the same system? all i did was get more ram (not from dell though), and installed the max (4GB), and the highest speed this mother board can support.
I got the ram from Memory-Up.com. its been working great for 3 years now. when i got it, i made sure to tell them my exact model number.
they have a scanner thing and plus I've had people read the model number written on the computer itself.
The service tag is a number on the computer that tell Dell it type and configuration.
Example, I have a Dell 1012 Netbook. That machine has a service tag V765DSG.
If I put that service tag in the place it ask, my model 1012 comes up, and it list all the parts and upgrades for that system. Memory, battery, drivers, like that.
When you put generic ram in your computer, it may have changed the locking code, or whatever, I don't know that, but it isn't the same system anymore, so the tool doesn't find it.
I did the same with my 1012 and even used Dell parts, but the tool won't see it, so I have to manually put the service tag in.
Dell was including it in install documents on their computers, so you could actually read it, but my latest machine didn't have it on board.
It is found on a sticker on the machine however.
Now, because I've not changed anything on this computer, the tool will find it for me. It was how I found it so I could write it down for record keeping.
Dell also has it, if you buy all your stuff on one account, or add system to your profile.
Dell is not the only company that uses service tags.
they should let you put the model number in too, in case you don't have the service tag
They do. It was how I gave you the link. How did that work for you?
well in case others are wondering this is the link Wayne gave me
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/inspiron-e1705/get-started
it doesn't list Windows 7 as an OS to choose drivers.
So Dell didn't update your drivers for your machine?
You could get the Vista drivers if listed, and allow Windows 7 to update these, or you could get the name of the card reader, and try that website, if the name is listed.
Or you could just disable it.
You never knew you had such a thing anyway, so.... Smile.
lol wayne....
I depended on MS to tel me if this thing would work on W7. That plus seeing others who have put W7 on this model.Dell doesn't officially support W7 for this older model.
Maybe i'll try w what you suggest for the vista drivers o or for the card that is listed.
forget if the card is even listed.
Well W 7 works just fine. A card reader just isn't an important piece of hard wear, and maybe the test even missed it.
yeah i hear ya man.
I've really had it! Either Windows 7 goes, this HP laptop goes, or both go at once. But I can't take this anymore! I'm constantly having problems with xthe sound. It used to completely turn off, so that I had to reboot. Now, it gets really loud. Sometimes, it turns off the wireless, so that I'm forced to play with the stupid touch strip and hope that I hit the right thing to get it back. My Thinkpad X60 has a nice switch for that, not to mention real buttons for volume! But perhaps, these things are caused by the drivers, and either they need to be reinstalled or the strip pad needs to be disabled, though I have no idea how I would get sound back if it decided to crash again. But the worst thing of all is when the computer decides to connect to "unidentified network", or even to our one from Fios, but not to the internet! My mother, who hates computers in the first place, is out of her mind. She has to keep disconnecting and reconnecting the modem! It's gotten so bad that now, I am getting my own internet and modem up here! There are other reasons, like horrible reception as soon as I walk out the door, and the fact that I get a landline and cable with the bundle, but this is the main one. I read that this really is a problem with Windows 7, and I'm not sure if it can be solved by just getting a usb wireless adapter, but for now, that is what I'll try. It just did it again, for well over half an hour, and then, it came back on, though Mom didn't do anything. Whether it was because of my rubbing my fingers across the touch strip or weather it just did it on its own, I don't know. But even on their worst days, none of this happens with my XP machines.
Regardless, that's enough experimentation. I'm sending my X60 down to Lee to get something decent put on it. I may possibly consider 7, since it's a different machine, but at this point, I'm ready to either just put XP back on it or skip Windows entirely and just do a full Knoppix install. I'm also sending down my DOS machine, so that he can install the screen reader from the compact flash card. This one will be sent when the others come back, either to be given to him, to be sold, or so that people can toss it back and forth to one another. I don't really care. Even the Android didn't cause me this many problems! The nexxt machine I get will either be a netbook or an X61!
It isn't Windows 7 the reason you keep asking your mom to reset your modem.
Send the HP to me. Smile.
Spend some money on a new computer. I'm not saying that to be mean.
You can get a decent laptop like you've been buying for around 400 dollars. You've spent that plus, and you still have crap.
Last, I forgot. Whoever told you this was a problem with Windows 7 is wrong.
If you think about that statement, how could the OS be at fault for internet glitches, or volume control issues, and such?
Hard wear dear.
why don't I have problems tiff?
I did just install Windows 7 on this laptop.
it works at least as good as XP, with the ease of use factor being much simpler.
I'm promising you its not Windows 7.
It could be drivers, or it could be hardware. but the OS? no.
its not the OS's fault.
it's definitely not windows 7's fault, but it's easier to blame it on at least something, when you're too stubborn to take a few deep breaths, calm the hell down, then be proactive.
I found it here. Apparently, other people have been having the same problem as well, but only with Windows 7 and not with XP.
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/b841a022-2579-4e5c-9d45-e6322d3b7b21/windows-7-no-internet-access-but-network-connected?forum=w7itpronetworking
When I tried to set the ip, I got something like "ipconfig is not a valid command". I didn't run the diagnostic tool, so don't know if it's a dns error, and even if it was, I don't know what that means. But just as with the poster who got it to work when the position of the modem cable was switched, mine works when Mom unplugs it and then plugs it back in, and sometimes on its own, as happened with another poster.
Also, to be more accurate. They did not specifically say that it's the fault of the operating system. But it does appear to be a problem found in Windows 7.
its your hardware, I sware it!. I am running a I5 2.5 turbo boost to 3.1, 8 gigs of ram and what ever apple puts in the current midd 2012 macs for a video card. How old is that mac tiff? If its a midd 2010 it can run get this, windows7 just fine, linix or vinux or what ever Linux OS you want it to run.
My Mac is from 2007 or so. But I'm talking about my HP Elitebook 2540P, not my MacBook.
I think it's about four years old.
Ok, so perhaps its an isolated problem with that spasific hardware config. but if it was a problem with windows 7, everybody and their mother no matter what hardware config they had would have this problem. If it was the problem of the OS, I'm 100% positive that MS wouldn't let something like this not get fixed.
I don't know as much as others on here, but wonder if the internet provider needs to come in and see what the problem is, especially since the computer is connecting to an unidentified network.
Tif my point about my mac running windows7 went above your head, let me brake it down for you. Windows7 is running on mac hardware with zero issues, others who have different configurations are not having your issues. So logic would state with simple reason its your hardware config not windows7.
Well, from reading the discussion you posted I first see you didn't type the correct command.
ipconfig /registerdns (there is a space between ipconfig and / )
Next, knowone talked about drivers, or encompatibly of the wireless card on the machine.
Last, this thread was from 2011?
Are you sure the laptop you have has been upgraded from XP to 7, and if so, was that upgrade done properly?
I did some upgrades, and these can have problems if not done correctly.
Next, back in 2011, many hardwear company's didn't have drivers for Windows 7 at all, so some things simply didn't work correctly.
But, all that won't matter to you at all, because you seem to want to find fault with Windows 7, but you've not tried, or do you even know, to get the software properly working on the machine.
Just last night I received a call about a machine that had Windows 7 on it from day one. The fix for that person was to "repair" windows. That means reinstalling it, or repairing it, so that it has all the parts it should have.
You don't know if your computer has all the software installed, because you've never tried to repair the Windows, or reset the computer.
Send it to me. Smile.
May I ask what you paid for it?
To be fair, I discovered today that this internet problem is not just with this HP. It was going on downstairs as well, with Joanies computer, which is also running 7, but also with my XP machine. Normally, I can get that one running when this one fails. So something is definitely wrong. Hopefully, my new modem and plan up here will fix that. But I lost sound several times today. Not all sound, just NVDA, and I couldn't get it back! Thankfully, I was abe to start System Access to Go, so that I didn't have to reboot again. I really don't want to have to stop using NVDA if I stick with Windows. I like their version of ESpeak, as it's far better than the generic one, and it's all free. SSATOGO is fine, but I have to always be online to use it, and System Access requires a subscription! I'm already subscribed to Samnet. Thankfully, I've heard that NVDA does work with 7. To be honest, I don't know what on Earth is going on. I never had these problems with NVDA and XP, and I'm not having them with SATOGO. Not the sound one, anyway, and it also reads the fields better when I save things. At least, I've never seen it not say anything when I hit tabs and whatnot.
As for whether this machine originally came with Windows 7, I honestly don't know. That's a good question! Would it help if I sent it down to Lee and he did a reformat and clean install, or is there a way to tell if this drive has a partition, and if so, what it's running? I know it's 64bit if that helps. I thought that there's no such thing as a 64bit version of XP and that you can't run anything on 32bit on a 32bit machine.
I don't remember exactly what I paied for it, but I think something like $280 or so. Maybe $300, but I doubt it. I'm sure I still have the e-mail from Ebay.
heh lee wayne or I would be more than happy to fix it. heres what I think.
Get the windows 7 key from the box, and do a total new clean install.
I haven't tried the repair option in w windows 7 as I haven't needed to but there's another idea as well.
but if anything is gonna fix your problems a clean install would.
if that doesn't fix it you got hardware problems.
as for your wireless that's not your computer.,
dunno wha'ts up with that.
Let us know what happens. If you are not connecting at all when you start, or if you disconnect in the middle of stuff, your modem is bad. I still wonder about your provider although you said something about a new plan. A clean install also sounds like a great idea, but once the new stuff gets installed, I would try that first before you do a whole new windows 7 install. Just a thought.
Modem could be going bad. Vary possible.
NVDA is not the cause, and I persoanally know a couple people that use it just fine with Windows 7, but I told you that.
Repair install is easier, but you need a Windows 7 disc of the correct kind, 32 or 64 bit, in your case 64 bit.
You also need some eyes. It isn't hard.
I've been saying this though, so.
I sincerely believe people like yourself should probably purchase one new computer that has tech support for a year or 2.
You have one good computer, it is relaxing to play with the rest if you require it for day to day needs.
Even if you had a willing person that would read things on the screen, you'd be better off, but without support, you waste lots of time, and money buying used computers you can't fix.
Just my thoughts.
The problems came to a head today. Last night, the machine turned itself off. I waited for over an hour, then turned it back on. I don't remember if I lost speech or what, but I had to turn it off again. It took over two hours, and turning it on and off, for me to get the speech back. Nothing worked, and sometimes, it sounded as if it wasn't even reaching the hard drive stage. When I got it talking, I got a message saying that Windows had unexpectedly shut down. Even using the power button, I have never seen this. Regardless, now, the speech is going in and out. Even as I write, it will be fine for a few minutes, then quit, then come back. I don't know if it's NVDA or this hardware or the interacting of both that's causing these issues. But my instinct says that it's not NVDA, since the dings when I hit the end of a line in wordpad disappear when the speech goes. Regardless, I'm sending this machine down to Lee with the others. Should I tell him to do a factory reset or should we just use a disk of Windows 7 to do a clean install? I am going to check the HP website for the drivers for this machine, incase I need them. I really hope that this solves my problems, once and for all! I am also going to try to install Windows 7 onto my Thinkpad X60, if it can handle it, which I think it can. Does anyone have any advice before we begin? Lee has installed Windows a number of times, though I'm not sure if it was only XP or if he installed 7 as well.
My apologies. I didn't see the previous posts until now. So it looks as if I can do a repair or a clean install. Which is better and why? There are no eyes in my home to help me. My parents are even more old school than I am, and just use computers for very basic things. Plus, they have no interest in getting involved in my technology. So if I cannot fix this by myself (which I would like to be able to do) I will need to send this one along with the rest. But I have to decide before tomorrow, as that's when the package is going out.
I forgot to ask. Suppose that I want to sell a Windows machine, and wanted to make sure that all of my data was permenantly erased. Would I need to use a wiping software or could I do either a factory reset or a clean install? Would this also work for an Android device or a MacBook?
Factory reset or clean installs erase everything.
A clean install means to format the disc, and start from scratch. In that case you'd need the driver kit for the model of computer you have.
Repair means to repair what is missing in windows. This is like reinstalling it, because it is fresh.
In this method, the drivers are still on the computer, and your documents and such.
Both will fix your issue.
Both require Windows 7 and the key that goes with it.
The key is written on a sticker on the machine, if this hasn't been removed.
If you don't have the key, you have to use a key recovering program.
If that doesn't work, you much purchase Windows 7, or if the machine was upgraded from Vista or XP, you'll need a new key if you don't have one.
There are two stickers on the right hand side of the machine. My guess is that these contain the information for the key. Is it possible to repair Windows and still use a screen reader or must I still send this one to e fixed? Perhaps, a factory reset would be best, so that we ensure that the correct drivers are installed and I can install only the programs that I want, etc.
In my experience no.
The OS is repairing, so nothing works.
Question however.
Why ship a computer anyplace when you have local shops that will do the work faster, give you a warrentee, and that cost would be about the same as shipping?
Unless you insure the package heavily, you risk the machine being damaged and not replaceable, and that cost.
Next, the time it requires.
Office Depot, or other reputable shop, could have it done in a matter of hours even, and back with you working par.
Just interested?
Not only am I sending this 7 machine, but an Acer Aspire d255 and a Thinkpad X31 that I'm selling for parts, plus a Thinkpad X60 and an HP Pavilion ZE5385US that I want upgraded and reset respectively. Then, I'm sending along an Itronix laptop that needs to have ASAP, VocalEyes or both installed, plus a few other important programs, some of which I want to test with said screen readers and some of which I know work well, as well as my Doubletalk, which must be tested. I also want the boot sequence in all working machines to be changed, incase of a need or desire to use Knoppix on them. I may very well turn the Pavilion into a permenant Knoppix machine if I don't just reinstall XP on it (it cannot handle 7). More importantly, Mom's very busy, and right now, she doesn't have the time nor the desire to take me to a place and then come back a few hours later to pick up the machines. She said that she would take me to a computer shop that refirbishes machines, to see about a desktop and a netbook, but not right now. I was already sending other things to Lee, including a few items to sell on Ebay, so it seemed good to do everything at once. He's also paying for shipping, so that's not an issue.
Just so that all of you don't think I'm selfish and crazy. I did offer to pay Lee, but he refused. Theres nothing romantic between us, but we're so close that we see each other as brother and sister, and are constantly doing things for each other. I will find some way to pay him back for his time and effort, even if it's not in money. He is sighted, but is extremely interested in all blind-related things, so maybe, we can start those braille lessons, and I can pay for him to have his Perkins fixed. I also don't expect everything back at once. All I need is one machine to use for now, and the rest can come later.
Tiffanitsa,
You'd said you'd use Knopix. There are other Linux distros that are accessible that will run on the system you said can't handle Windows 7.
OpenSuSE: http://mirrors2.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/13.1/iso/openSUSE-13.1-GNOME-Live-i686.iso
Ubuntu 14.04 Longterm Support.
Sonar based off of Arch Linux with a graphical installer with MATE when it comes out.
Debian 7 with an accessible command line net installer.
How do you do the shipping? Do you have say UPS come buy and pick up your packages?
No. My parents just drop things off at the post office or Mom goes with a neighbour (she's sighted but doesn't drive. Still, that's very interesting. I didn't realise that UPS picks packages up at people's houses!
I want to analyze your mind before you are allowed a mind to micro memory device. For
sure. Why dont you write an elegant keystroke sheet on win 7 and the new file manager.
N v d a.
UPS and Fed Ex will pick things up from your door actually.
You had said your parents didn't have time to take you to say Office Depot, or to take your computer in to be repaired, so I wondered how you were shipping all your items was all.
You can read all about the home pick up on both of the companies websites.
You can also call them.
I should note that Office Depot won't do restore work, just repair or reset your Windows 7 computer.
A couple of questions, as I go along setting up my win 7 computer.
Somewhere along the way I set internet explorer to play a sound when I reach the top or bottom of a screen. That was a bad idea. I've looked everywhere I can think of: settings center, explorer options, but I just can't find it. Any ideas?
Second question. This computer doesn't come with an email program. I thought my office programs would include outlook, but I don't seem to have it.
Am I going to have to use an online service like google mail or Hotmail? or are there other options for me?
Thanks.
Bob
Bob, I know this is too late to help, but when I bought my computer a few weeks ago and bought Office 2013, I had to ask if it came with Outlook. I'm glad I asked, because the store had two or three different Office 2013 configurations available, and only one had Outlook. You may have to buy it separately now or else go with one of the web based email programs. Maybe someone else will know more. I was told there was something similar to Outlook Express that came with one of the versions of Office, but I didn't want something similar if I couldn't have the real thing. So I settled for Outlook rather than Outlook Express.
I haven't used an e-mail client in years, since I do everything on GMail. But I wanted to backup my accounts. So I tried Thunderbird, which is free. It seemed to be fairly accessible, though the account that I was trying to save was too large, since the inbox was over 4gb. So is my other one, for that matter. I still don't know how to do this, but I can say that Thunderbird was fairly decent, though it came with extras that I would probably never use. There is also a package, written specifically for the blind, called Altair. It's an e-mail client, browser, and text editor all in one. You can find it here. Note that the installation is in Japanese, so you need to pay attention to things like where it's being installed, in order to know what it's doing. But after that, the rest is in English.
http://www.normanet.ne.jp/~altair/index_e.html
Bob, I wondered about your choice of Office, and would have asked about this, but I’d given you my thoughts, and you purchased what you purchased, if I am making sense.
You need Home, or Home and Business, not the student version.
I wonder if your company will allow you simply to buy the upgrade. I’d ask. It is as simple as a download.
For free, I like Windows Live Mail. This will come in a suite of programs called Windows essentials, and this is already installed on your computer under the getting started.
Just say you want to download them all, and you’ll have the email client. This client works really similar to Outlook.
If it isn’t installed, do a search for it, and download the programs you want.
Now to the sounds in Internet explorer.
Go to internet options, go over to advanced, and arrow down to accessibility, and that comes up soon. Under that you’ll see play system sounds, and turn that off.
Need more directions say what I’ve missed?
my dell desktop has windows 7 on it, with microsoft outlook, Microsoft word 2010, ETC. I'm not sure if that's helpful to anyone, but wanted to make that known, just in case.
I just did a bit of research on Windows XP Mode in Windows 7. It comes not only in Professional, as I thought, but also in Enterprise and Ultimate. What I didn't realise is that this is not a fully virtual machine, meaning that you can access the hard drive and programs from the 7 side. This means that it's just as dangerous as using real XP, though as I heard, I won't need to worry about that for awhile. Still, I know that if I stay with Windows, I'll be forced to use 7. Either I want a shell, or if that's not possible, then I'd like to know how to safely use XP in a virtual machine. I still like the setup and functions far better than in 7, at least 99% of the time. At any rate, here's the article.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7
For normal people. Don't do XP mode in Windows 7. It was more of a compatibility test for older programs.
Just use Windows 7. For most things, it really isn't that different.
Also I'll add to Leo's post XP mode doesn't turn your Windows 7 in to an XP machine, it just makes programs that weren't compatible, compatible.
That was way back, and an effort by Microsoft to help businesses switch over easier.
Now it is just not necessary, because not only have all programs become compatible with Windows 7, why would you want to be using a really old program that probably has security holes, and won't be compatible with your neighbors if you are working with them on a project?
Just silly to me.
I suppose, for businesspeople, that makes sense. But I don't collaborate with others as far as computers. I pretty much just use Wordpad, Notepad, Kindle (rarely)_, Calculator, Samnet, Klango, Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic (changed name/latest version), Firefox (or other browser), Debut Video Capture Software, Recordpad, Doxilion, Skype, Winzip 9, Ninite, Revo Uninstaller, plus a few games. The same holds true for my desktop, except that I will be seeking ocr software (probably Scan2text) and a braille translation program for that. I also just found something called XP Burn, which I installed via Ninite, and it looks interesting, though I doubt I will be using it often.
what programs of those do you insist on using in XP and why?
You got CD Berner XP from ninite which is an awesome little program.
I like XP because it's easier to search for files, I can just hit run to get to programs, I can shut down and restart easier, and I don't have to deal with the nonsense when saving files. That said, the saving and the "unknown" errors in Firefox seem to be NVDA issues.
Soon all these programs you are using that only work with XP won't communicate with the web, so it isn't just business people, it is the everyday user.
If your machine were something you didn't use online, why not just use a true XP machine, and you have one, instead of trying to make Windows 7 work like XP?
Shutdown and restarting Windows 7 is actually faster than XP. You just need to learn where the power button are, and I think I've even posted how on this board.
Here is my last argument.
When you learn how to use Windows 7, and get your computer working properly, you'll find it just fine. Until than, or you refuse to change, and that is okay, you'll hate Windows 7.
People will, so you'll have lots of company.
If I wanted to use XP, I'd use XP until it just didn't work.
I'd also accept the risk in doing so, and stop trying to figure out how to make it new. Smile.
Well getting to run in 98, 2k, XP, 7, 8, 8.1 and 8.1 update is exactly the same...
windows ke+R
Shut down. easy Windows key+D b brings you to desktop. alt+F4. simple. this works from 98 thru 8.1 update like the run does.
the search in 7 is actually much easier and more straight forward than it is in XP. and in 8.1 it is even nicer than 7 because not only does it search thru your computer but next brings up web results that you can clikc on. i haven't tried hitting enter on the web results from within my search in windows 8.1 update, but my guess is that you'll hit enter, and it'll open up the results in whatever search engin you have set in IE or your browser of choice.
Its really not that bad upgrading to new. but as wayne said get that 7 pc working and working as it should.
You got lots of info here on using 7 and hope that does help you out somehow someday.
